Ask any local and they’ll tell you: some of the best parts of living in Southern Humboldt happen down by the river. Here are 3 favorite river spots in and around Garberville that locals look forward to every summer.
☀️ 1. Dean Creek – Classic local swimming hole vibes. Easy access, cool water, big rocks to hang out on, and tucked right into the redwoods near Redway. This is the kind of spot people grow up going to every summer. To get there, head south from Garberville toward Redway and take the Redwood Drive area toward Dean Creek Road. Several pull-off access spots lead down to the river.
🏞 2. Eel River at Benbow - Whether you’re floating, swimming, fishing, or just relaxing on the bank, the Eel River near Benbow is hard to beat. Early evenings here in the summer are pure Southern Humboldt. To get there, take Benbow Drive toward the Benbow Inn area and follow signs toward the river access and park areas nearby.
🌿 3. Richardson Grove River Access - A quieter stretch of river surrounded by massive redwoods and beautiful scenery. Perfect for a slower day, picnic, or cooling off after exploring the grove. To get there, drive south on Hwy 101 into Richardson Grove State Park. Multiple pullouts and trail access points lead down to the river.
