People ask me all the time what it’s really like to live in Southern Humboldt. And honestly, the redwoods and the river are the easy part to explain. What’s harder to put into words is the community itself. I’ve lived here my whole life. I raised my family here. I built my career here. And the thing that keeps me rooted more than the scenery, more than the lifestyle is the people. Specifically, the people who show up. Over and over again, year after year, for this place and for each other.
Let me introduce you to some of them:
The Backbone
Every community needs people willing to do the unglamorous work the planning, the organizing, the showing up to meetings when nobody’s watching. In Southern Humboldt, that’s the Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce. They’re not flashy, but they’re foundational. The kind of organizations that keep a small town functioning and connected.
The Soul
Then there are the organizations that show you what a community actually values. Hospice of Humboldt walks alongside families during their hardest moments with so much grace and care. Community Cornerstone steps in when people are struggling and need a hand up. The Healy Senior Center makes sure our elders aren’t just surviving they’re seen, supported, and celebrated.
These aren’t just nonprofits checking boxes. They’re neighbors taking care of neighbors. That’s it. That’s the whole thing.
The Voice
KMUD community radio has been telling the story of Southern Humboldt for decades. Local news. Local music. Local voices. I grew up listening to it and I still do. If you want to understand this place quickly, tune in. It’ll tell you more about who we are than any real estate listing ever could.
The Stewards
Southern Humboldt is stunning. And it takes real, ongoing work to keep it that way. Sanctuary Forest has been protecting the land, water, and watershed here for decades quietly, persistently, doing the work that doesn’t always make headlines but absolutely matters. The Trees Foundation carries that same long-view spirit, investing in the forests that define this region for generations to come.
The Heartbeat
If there’s one place that captures the soul of Southern Humboldt, it’s the Mateel Community Center. Concerts, community dinners, fundraisers, celebrations the Mateel is where this community comes together. And if you’ve ever been to Reggae on the River, you already get it. If you haven’t honestly, put it on your list.
This is just a small sample of the many organizations that make Southern Humboldt so special. There are volunteers, artists, farmers, activists, and everyday people pouring themselves into this place constantly. It’s not perfect. No place is. But it’s real, and it’s deeply, genuinely cared for.
When people ask me why I still live and work here after all these years, this is my answer.
Someone gets to call this home. Maybe that someone is you.
If Southern Humboldt has been on your mind and you want to know more about the community, the market, what it’s actually like to put down roots here : I’d love to talk. Reach out anytime.
